Some of the Walks Close to Ohakune

Mangawhero River Walkway – A good walking/cycling track follows the Mangawhero River  from Ohakune as far as ‘The Powderhorn Chateau’.  A beautiful  easy walk.  Return the same way or follow Goldfinch Street back to Ohakune.

Ohakune Old Coach Road & Historic Viaducts – Good track for walking/cycling (2 hrs return)  Interesting historical plaques along the way to the viaducts..

Mangawhero Forest/Rimu Walk – Easy  walk (approx. 1 hr) Good track which is well sheltered by the forest.

Waitonga Falls Walk –  Further up The Mountain Road, a good walking track with a good view of Mt Ruapehu.  Some steep bits on track down to the falls.  Approx  1 hr. 20 mins return.

Lake Surprise via Cascades – The cascades are incredibly beautiful & go on & on.  Fantastic views – Mt Taranikii may be seen on a clear day.  Very steep & precipitous in parts but well worth the effort.

National Park Walks – Whakapapa 

Taphai Falls Walk – Just 5 mins return – the waterfall is worth seeing.  Have a dip in the river on a summer day.

Taranaki Falls Walk – Fantastic walk on a clear day.  Amazing view of all three mountains en-route to the beautiful Taranaki Falls.

Silica Rapids Walk – Starts with walk through lovely forest opening up to good view of Mt Ruapehu then on to the terraces of the Silica Rapids.

Skyline Route Walk – Not a walk for winter time.  Take the chair lift ride then walk poled route.  Very steep but worth the climb for the most incredible views of all three mountains and sometimes Taranaki in the distance.
